  • Dragon's Den star product available from Toolstation

Dragon's Den viewers who were impressed with the MagnaMole  magnetic cable guide will  be pleased to learn it is now available from lo-cost trade supplier Toolstation.

The innovation from Talpa Products, attracted investment from Duncan Bannatyne and James Caan for solving the age-old engineering problem of threading wires and cables through cavity walls and void spaces.

After drilling a hole in the wall, insert the magnetic rod, screw the appropriate cap to the end of the cable or wire, align the magnets and simply push the cable into the hole and through the other side of the wall.

"No other tool has been designed with this specific task in mind", said Toolstation's product marketing manager Christian Egerton. "It is easy and effective, saving time and frustration and reduces the risk of electrical accidents.  It can also thread at an angle and safely through other wiring and cable obstacles."

MagnaMole has joined Toolstation's extensive electrical category, forming part of Toolstation's 10,000 plus product range. It retails at just £12.96, and can be ordered online at www.toolstation.com, by freephone on 0808 100 7211 or at one of Toolstation's nationwide Sales Counters. It comes with a variety of caps, colour coded for different sized cable, and magnetic rod extensions.

  • Poorly designed tools lead to on-site injuries

A new survey by Bahco, the hand tool manufacturer, has revealed the majority of electricians blame poor tools for on-site injuries.

Bahco found 90% of electricians blamed inappropriate, poorly designed or uncomfortable tools as the main cause of on-site injuries. Yet the overarching factors electricians consider when purchasing hand tools are not the quality of the tool, but the ease of use and the brand. 50% stated these are what they look for prior to purchase. This differs greatly from other professional trades; for plumbers, the main focus is on cost (57%), but joiners base their purchasing decision on the tool brand (57%).

The survey suggests only 10% of electricians prioritise ergonomic features when purchasing hand tools, yet surprisingly nearly all (90%) electricians use tools that have been ergonomically designed. In fact, 70% of electricians are willing to pay more for ergonomic design, which shows how highly they really value the benefits.

The majority (90%) of electricians surveyed said comfort, speed and efficiency of working are the core benefits of using ergonomically designed tools.

The survey also revealed, compared to builders, fewer electricians felt their distributors provided advice on ergonomic tools. Only 20% of electricians stated their distributors advised them compared to 44% of builders. This highlights the need for more product information and advice to be provided by electrical distributors when selling hand tools.

Kevin Parkes, customer care centre manager at Bacho, said: "These results show good quality tools ensure high quality of work. Each time a electrician grips a tool 42 muscles are being put to work. By subjecting themselves to the strain this causes daily electricians risk overexertion, pain
or numbness in parts of their hands. That's why ergonomically designed tools are essential part of any electrician's toolkit."

The new version contains a Polling Window for observing all polled data together and offers the possibility of recording GOOSE traffic into COMTRADE files. A free trial version of the software is available at http://www.omicron.at/  and http://www.omicronusa.com/ .

IEC 61850 is also reflected in the new features of OMICRON's Test Universe software. Version 2.30 of the CMC control software now supports 360 additional virtual GOOSE inputs and outputs for testing in the IEC 61850 environment. Additionally the new PermaSync function allows analog and sampled values outputs remaining permanently synchronized with the external reference.
